Uber Supreme Court decision is out

19 February 2021

Calling all Gig Economy workers!

Uber v Aslam: Supreme Court decision today! We will finally find out whether Uber’s drivers are workers or self-employed... This is a complicated area of law looking at some pretty obscure legislation but I think the simple question gig economy/platform companies need to ask themselves to know whether their people are self-employed or workers is... “In our client’s eyes are we providing a service (e.g. taxi service or food delivery) or are we matching them with a person who will then work for them (e.g. babysitter or accountant)…

If service = worker. If matching = self-employed.

And it’s out! And as suspected Uber is a taxi service and so its drivers are “workers”. Common sense prevails!
